Hilda RayappanMangalore : Hilda Rayappan, Director of Prajna counseling Centre, said employing children as domestic help can still be seen in various places of the district, though people are a little wary to employ child labourers in hotels and other business establishments.

Speaking at a meeting held at the DC office on June 4, Tuesday, to  discuss arrangements to be made for the World Anti-Child Labour Day to be observed on June 12, she said  there need to be a growing awareness among the masses on the need to eradicate child labour. Along with awareness even the fear of stern punishment can put an end to the practice, she said.

The labour department officials  informed the meeting that three child labourers have been traced during 2012-13 and all the three have been rehabilitated. If one child has been entrusted to his parents, another one is admitted to a school, while the third child labourer has been admitted to Chinnara Tangudhama at Bejai Kapikad.

It was decided on the occasion to take out a jatha from Jyothi Circle to Town Hall on June 12 as part of World Anti-Child Labour Day. Street plays and mime shows will also be held.

Deputy Commissioner N Prakash presided over the meeting.

Several officials including Additional DC KA Dayananda and other departmental officials were present.
