Mangalore : Narmada Bachao champion and award-winning social activist Medha Patkar said inequality is the major problems of the country.
She was speaking at an interactive session held at Roshni Nilaya, the School of Social Work on March 6 Tuesday. Speaking on the Narmada Bachao Andolan, she said that, though the movement was started 26 years ago the process is still in progress, even though the construction of the dam has been stopped and large numbers of people are yet to be rehabilitated and environmental conditions are yet to be met.
Commenting on the Special Economic Zones, she said that the growth in urban and industrial sector is a sign of development, but it is an attempt to relocate living community with industries. This is a process where natural resources are interchanged into market products. In this issue the common people who fight against such development are also termed as ‘against development’.
The easily achieved linking rivers will give birth to a number of problems. Hence it is necessary to know the details of funds required for this project and also stated that this project will increase number of demographic problems too.
