Udupi : Udupi Gold and Silver Jewelry Makers Association staged a protest in front of Udupi SP office on April 22, Tuesday, demanding to stop the police harassment on the gold and silver jewelry makers on the charges of being accused in the robbery cases.
It is learnt that recently the Kaup Police have registered a case against gold and silver jewelry maker Chetan from Bantakal in Udupi Taluk, for the only reason of being a neighbor of main accused in the robbery Raviraj Devadiga and Prakash Devadiga. Even though there is no connection between the duo with Chethan, the Police had entered his house in his absence and threatened his mother and sister and registered the robbery case against him.
The Police have also harassed Suresh Acharya from Falimar, who was unaware about the theft and purchased the gold from the robbers.
It is said that Suresh had purchased only 22 grams gold from the robbers, but police harassed him to return 78 gram gold, finally with the help of association, Suresh had to give 55 gram of gold to police.
The association submitted a petition to the Superintendent of Police urging stop giving the physical and mental torture to the gold and silver jewelry maker without proof.
They also handed over memorandum to Asst. Superintendent of Police Santhosh Kumar.
Association leaders Dayananda Acharya, Madhu Acharya, Raghunath, Arun, Jayaprakash Acharya, Yogish Acharya, BJP leaders K. Raghupathi Bhat, Udaykumar Shety and others were present.
