jayachandraMangaluru : The State government will move an amendment to the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) Act, 1992, in the Budget session of the State legislature, according to Minister for Higher Education and Law and Parliamentary Affairs T.B. Jayachandra.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) had sought the amendment to limit the activities of the KSOU within the State.

After the UGC withdrew its recognition to some courses offered by KSOU last year, the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Delhi, had specifically sought deletion of the provision made under Section 3(2) of the Act that permitted KSOU to open study centres outside Karnataka.

The MHRD had said that the KSOU was flouting UGC norms and offering courses without approval. Hence, its degrees/diplomas are not considered valid by employers in the job market.

In an informal chat with media persons at Kadri Park where he inaugurated a ‘honey-cum-organic mela’, Mr. Jayachandra said the government would strive to prevent other State universities from offering courses in Karnataka.
