Kasargod: Kasargod has come to a grinding halt after the day-long hartal called by the district BJP committee on Tuesday turned violent after stone pelting incidents were witnessed.
The police tried lathi charge but when it failed to work, they were forced to resort to the use of tear gas to disperse the mob and take control of the situation.
It is said that the protestors pelted stones at the police. They also forcibly shut down shops and stopped vehicles. It is learnt that several vehicles have been damaged in the clashes.
Several commercial establishments have been shut while schools and colleges have declared a holiday. Lack of transport saw several passengers stranded at the railway station.
