Udupi : Members of the Association of Lorry and Tempo Operators Transporting Building Material staged a protest in front of the traffic police station here on Saturday alleging rough behaviour by a traffic policeman.
M.G. Nagendra, convener of the association, said here that four trucks carrying “jelly” and stones were stopped by Traffic Inspector Venkatesh, who imposed fines on them on Saturday morning, despite an assurance given by officials of the district administration on Friday that no fines would be imposed on trucks and vans carrying building construction material until permits were issued to them. The officials had also said that permits would be issued to these vehicles within 15 days.
Based on that assurance, the association members started transporting construction material, but Mr. Venkatesh stopped four vehicles and imposed fines on them. He also alleged that Mr. Venkatesh used abusive language and behaved in a rough manner. The traffic police stopped vehicles transporting constructing material and fined them
The demand of the association was that Mr. Venkatesh should be transferred to a post in the Police Department where he would not be in direct contact with people, Mr. Nagendra said.
After getting the news of the incident, the association members brought and parked about 20 trucks at the traffic police station as a mark of protest.
Meanwhile, N. Vishnuvardhana, Additional Superintendent of Police, told that an inquiry would be launched into the matter by the Deputy Superintendent of Police.
