Mangaluru: India post released a special postal cover to mark the birth centenary of late Dr M P Pai. The release programme was held at the main post office at Pandeshwar on Tuesday.
Mangaluru Post Office senior superintendent M. Jagadish Pai released the special postal cover. MAHE retired Vice-Chancellor, Dr. B.M. Hegde was the chief guest of the programme.
Mangaluru Panduranga Pai was famous known as Dr. M.P. Pai. He was an expert in his field and was known for his humane approach. He was the founder chairman of the first-ever postgraduate department (general surgery) in a medical college (KMC) in the erstwhile state of Mysore. Dr Pai is also the first Dr B C Roy awardee from the then erstwhile undivided Dakshina Kannada district. Over 500 doctors have emerged surgeons after successfully completing the course started by him.
Chief guest KMC Dean Dr. M.V. Prabhu said that the big KMC building on Lighthouse Hill Road was Dr. M.P. Pai’s contribution. He gave importance to research and built a research lab on the top floors of the building. His lectures were not just limited to Mangaluru but were also given at Manipal KMC. He created a division at Manipal which specialized in treating burn wounds.
After his retirement he went to Oman and gave his service as a consulting surgeon at Khabus Hospital in Salala. During the last days of his life, he returned back to Mangaluru and provided solutions to problems relating to surgery in and around the city. He expired on 27th August 1992. His service in the field of medicine is appreciable.
Post office senior post master L.Prakash was attended the programme. Dr G G Laxman Prabhu, urologist and an avid philatelist spoke at the function and Dinesh invited the guests.
