Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer M.R. Ravi has said that there is a need for more campaigning on family planning in the district which has been ranked 29th in terms of people adopting family planning.
Speaking at the Population Day at the Town Hall here on Wednesday, Mr. Ravi said that it was sad to see a literate district such as Dakshina Kannada placed 29th.
“This is not the ranking for a progressive district [Dakshina Kannada]. The district fared poorly in terms of men coming forward for vasectomy,” he said.
Mr. Ravi said that only 23 men came forward for vasectomy in the entire district last year.
Mr. Ravi said that it was important to make people realise the importance of family planning.
There was not enough land for the population that was increasing. He stressed having more number of awareness programmes that will help an individual in taking a decision on family planning.
Inaugurating the programme, Nalin Kumar Kateel, Member of Parliament, said that it was important to have family planning awareness programmes in the rural parts of the district. Increase in the population will affect the development of the State and the country, he said.
District Health Officer Ramakrishna Rao and Principal of Government First Grade College, Car Street, Mangaluru, Rajashekar Hebbar, spoke.
