Central team visits Udupi to assess rain damage

priyankaUdupi: A team of senior officers deputed by the Union government to study rain damage visited various places in Udupi district on Wednesday.

The district received heavy rains in the last three months. The team came from Mangaluru to Karkala. Priyanka Mary Francis, Deputy Commissioner, accompanied the team. They inspected damaged roads, buildings, basic infrastructure facilities, and destruction of crops.

The team first visited Jayanti Nagar School at Kukkundur near Karlala, whose building was damaged during the rains. They also inspected the badly damaged Udupi-Karkala road.

They then visited the arecanut plantations, which had been affected by Kole Roga, and listened to the pleas of arecanut growers.

They inspected the damaged Hosmar-Eedu bridge and connecting road there and collected information about it from the Public Works Department. They also inspected the temporary works being carried on at the damaged rural bridge and road at Nuralbettu village.

A footbridge used by people had got washed away at Landelu in Nuralbettu. The team inspected the spot. They also inspected the damage done to a bridge at Kalathur-Gurme near Shirva.

They then held a meeting with Ms. Francis and other district officers at the Inspection Bungalow in Karkala. Ms. Francis informed the team that the loss had been estimated at ₹150 crore.

Roads and basic infrastructure had been damaged, while agricultural and horticultural crops had been destroyed. The boats of a lot of fishermen had got destroyed. As many as 1,058 houses had been damaged by rains, Ms. Francis said.

The team collected information on the compensation paid to fishermen in Kerala.
