2011 flies past leaving many memories

Praveen Bai Thogadiya

Mangalore The year 2011 is a thing of the past, but the memories are still fresh. Here is a brief overview of some of the things that happened during the previous year.

In January 2011, Praveen Bhai Togadia, the general secretary of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), delivered a provocative speech at the Hindu Samajotsava organized by Shri Hanuman Shakti Jagarana Samithi on Nehru Maidan.

Shailaja Bhat, Dhanalakshmi Janardhan

In February 2011, Shailaja Bhat was elected as the president of the DK Zilla Panchayat while Dhanalakshmi Janardhan was elected as its vice president. Katpady Shankar Poojary and Jyothi S. Shetty were elected as the president and vice president of Udupi ZP, respectively. 

Ravishanker Guruji

Shri Shri Ravishankar Guruji visited Mangalore for the first time after Art of Living was launched in Mangalore in 1996.
The diocese of Mangalore supported by like-minded organizations organized a mega protest at Nehru Maidan rejecting the Justice B. K. Somashekar Commission of Inquiry report and urging the government to hand over the investigations of the church attacks of 2008 to the CBI.

Mayor Praveen Kumar

Praveen Kumar took over as Mangalore’s 14th mayor.

Pushpak

In March 2011, Team Mangalore, a group of avid kite fliers, attended the Uiseon International Kite Fest held in South Korea from March 31 to April 3.

Yoga Guru Ramdev

In April 2011, Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev visited Mangalore. MCC also launched its Civic Tiger, which created a lot of controversy within the city. Lokayukta Santhosh Hegde launched a monthly magazine called Coastal Mirror in Mangalore.

Mata Amrutanandamayi launched a clean Mangalore project

In May 2011, Matha Amritanandamayi visited Mangalore and launched a clean Mangalore project as part of a larger project called Amala Bharatam. Dr. N. S. Channappa Gowda took over as the new DC of DK, and a condolence meet was held in honor of the victims of the Mangalore plane crash. Also, Dr. M. T. Reju took over as the DC of Udupi.

In June 2011, B. S. Yeddyurappa, the former CM of Karnataka, and JD (S) chief H. D. Kumaraswamy swear before the idol of Lord Manjunatha in Dharmasthala. The city was also shocked by the double murder of a mother and a daughter in Panjimogaru, a case that has not been solved so far.

In July 2011, the government of Karnataka withdrew the land acquisition for the II Phase of MSEZ.

Sadananda Gowda

In Aug 2011, CM D. V. Sadananda Gowda was warmly welcomed when he visited DK for the first time after becoming the CM. 
 
In September 2011, Kasargod Chinna was appointed as the president of the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy, the Mangalore Air Crash Victims’ Families Association decided to move Supreme Court, and Dr. Harish Kumar became MCC commissioner.

In October 2011, PC Mahadev Mane died in a Naxal encounter and the Janchethana Yatra, launched by senior BJP leader L. K. Advani, arrived in Mangalore.

In November 2011, St. Alphonsa Church in Mangalore was attacked and K. H. Muniyappa, the union minister of state for railways, flagged off the Mangalore to Palakkad intercity express from Mangalore Central Railway Station.

The trial of serial killer Mohan Kumar began and Shivaram, the backward class leader, was assaulted for raising his voice against Made Snana.

In December 2011, Umanath A. Kotian took over as the new president of the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy and Pratap Reddy took over as the inspector general of police (western range).  The 72nd All India Inter-varsity Athletic Championship was also held in Moodubidri.
