Mangalore University : Special session held on protection of IPR

Mangalore: Mangalore University , Department of Biosciences, in association with the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs, Trademarks (CGPDTM)- Government of India (under NIPAM) organized a special session on the protection of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) with special emphasis on patent protection, recently at Prof. U.R. Rao Auditorium of the varsity.

Resource person, IP Consultant & IP Facilitator for start-ups Dr. Babitha Pais Tharappan, mentioned in her session that the Government of India is encouraging the general public, especially students, to translate their innovative ideas into products and to protect them by leveraging IPR processes which include Patents, Trademarks, Designs and Copyrights.

In India, there is no dearth of people with innovative ideas and the nation is teeming with youth who can come out with effective solutions to contemporary problems. “Even a simple solution for an unsolved problem can be patented and utilized commercially. Put simply, a patent confers a legal right to one’s invention,” she said and also explained the criteria that should be fulfilled while filing for a patent.

Mangalore University Department of Bioscience Professor Prof. Prashantha Naik chairing the session mentioned in his introductory note that every person’s most valuable asset is intellect and it is nature’s gift. However, it needs to be utilized at the right time and in the right form, especially by the younger generation who have a capacity for innovation.

Industrial Chemistry Assistant Professor Dr. Ramesh S. Gani, in his concluding remarks said that one has to think differently to solve a problem and get a product. Experience in a field of interest can be a significant basis for innovative and effective solutions which subsequently can be patented.

Dept of Biosciences Chairperson Prof. Chandra M welcomed the guests and gathering. Staff coordinator of the program Dr. Laveena K.B introduced the resource person, Mr. Sourav mastered the ceremony and Megha N.S. proposed the vote of thanks. Students, research scholars, guest lecturers, and faculty members from various PG programs attended the lecture.
