Medical student, officer held for selling ganja in Mangaluru

Mangaluru : Ten persons were arrested, including medical students and an overseas citizen of India staying in Mangaluru for more than a decade, on charges of ganja-peddling and consumption.

The accused, including four women, have been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

Mangaluru City police commissioner N Shashi Kumar on Wednesday said the accused are from four colleges. Based on a tip-off, a CCB team led by inspector Shyam Sundar HM arrested Neel Kishorilal Ramji Shah, 38, possessing UK citizenship, from an apartment at Bunts Hostel Road here on January 7.

Shah, who was picked up for possession of ganja, has been in Mangaluru for 15 years and claims to be a fourth-year student at a dental college. Police recovered 2kg ganja worth Rs 50,000, two cellphones, a toy pistol, a dagger, Rs 7,000 and a digital weighing scale.

During his three-day custody, police received information about others, including medical and dental college students and doctors, allegedly involved in ganja peddling and consumption, and arrested nine more people.

The arrested have been identified as Dr Sameer, 32, from Kerala and a medical officer; Dr Nadiya Siraj, 24, from Kerala and an MBBS intern; Dr Manimaran Mutthu, 28, from Tamil Nadu and a medical surgeon; Dr Varshini Prathi, 26, from Andhra Pradesh and an MBBS intern; Dr Bhanu Dhahiya, 27, from Chandigarh and an MD psychiatry student; Dr Riya Chadda, 22, from Chandigarh and a dental student; Dr Kshithij Gupta, 25, from Delhi and an MS Ortho student; Dr Ira Basin, 23, from Pune and an MBBS student; and Mohammed Rauf alias Gouse 34, from Maripalla in Bantwal.

Preliminary investigations said they were also allegedly consuming MDMA and other synthetic drugs. The arrested were residing in PG accommodations, apartments and hostels in the city.

Three more people arrested in connection with the drugs peddling and consumption racket on Thursday.
