Mangalore : The authorities came under fire from local residents of Suratkal area on March 25 and 26 for initiating the works of the tollgate near the NIT-K at Suratkal despite severe opposition.
The works were initiated on March 25, Monday when locals gathered and demanded that they do not need a tollgate and moreover it was constructed in violation of the rule that states that a tollgate cannot function within 60 km radius of the city. Though the works were suspended in the evening, on March 26, works were once again initiated much to the worry of the locals.Representatives of various organizations gathered on the occasion and entered into an altercation with the NHAI and IRCON officials. The officials produced a letter from the DC which has asked them to take up the works on a priority basis. The NHAI officials also said onl the tollgate was being constructed and no toll would be levied as of now.
The protestors who were not satisfied decided to observe a bundh in Suratkal on March 7, Wednesday.
