Puttur Mahalingeshwara Car Festival ends after a week

Putur Temple FestivalPuttur: The last day’s fire-crackers and explosives show known as ‘Bedi-Kamba’ in Puttur Mahalingeshwara Temple was held on Sunday, watched in interest and awe by both children and elders alike. They were elated and excited when colourful fire-crackers rent the air with various sounds and designs in bursts. It was the last day of a week-long car festival at the ancient temple which also runs buffalo races of repute on its grounds, during a season.
The temple is about 8 centuries old and regularly renovated, with a tall chariot carrying divine images drown on ropes held by enthusiastic devotees on car festival day.
It began on April 10 and ended a week later. The chariot was pulled at night, amidst great dedication to the Lord Mahalingeshwara. Several rituals and practices were gone through, like Bangarakatte Savari and Daivas worship etc.. Around a lakh of devotees participated in the events, arriving from villages.
