Mangaluru : Tuluvere Paksha, a new political party formed to demand recognition to Tulu language, has decided to contest from Belthangady and a few other assembly segments in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi.

Shailesh RJ, who will be contesting from Belthangady, demands that the government declare Tulu as the second official language in Karnataka and that it should be included in Schedule VIII of the Indian Constitution.

Shailesh said soon after the election is declared by the Election Commision, the names of candidates in other constituencies will be announced. “We have plans to field at least four candidates in the coastal districts. Our members will also contest from Karkala, Udupi and Mangaluru City South.

The decision regarding three other constituencies is yet to be taken,” he said. A civil contractor, Shailesh, said he along with like-minded people have already commenced his poll campaign in Belthangady.

“We have been meeting voters and banners have already been put up at many places in the constituency. We have members in all constituencies and many of them have contested in gram panchayat elections for the cause of Tulu. Many of our members also have been planning to contest in the town panchayat and municipality elections in future,” he said.

The activism for the cause of Tulu language began with the forming an organisation called Tulunadu Okkoota in 2013, he said. Members of the Okkoota discussed about the problems related to Tulu, which needs to get due recognition at the government level.

“We realised that only elected representatives like MLAs and MPs can pursue the matter and bring recognition for the language. Hence, members decided to launch a political party and thereby put pressure on the government for our demands,” he added.
