Bangalore : Former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa on Saturday surrendered before a Lokayukta court in a land scam case and then was sent to jail after he was remanded in judicial custody till Oct 22.
He surrendered before the Lokayukta court in the evening around 5 pm. He was taken to Bangalore Central Jail.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said it would stand by Yeddyurappa and the state unit also in a statement said they would move the high court against the arrest warrant.
Congress on the other hand slammed the BJP and said the denial of bail to Yeddyurappa exposed the latter’s immorality and double standard.
“This is the CM who was reluctant to leave office and when he left, made a lot of noise,” said Singhvi, adding that the BJP is not practising what it is preaching.
Yeddyurappa was earlier not found at his residence by the Lokayukta police when they went to execute the warrant soon after the special Lokayukta court denied him bail in the land denotification case, and issued arrest warrant against him.
Yeddyurappa had earlier skipped attending the court in the case pertaining to denotification of land in Bangalore that benefited his associates and family members.
Former Karnataka minister S N Krisnaiah Setty was also denied bail. He was in Yeddy’s cabinet.
Yeddyurappa’s sons B Y Raghavendra, Lok Sabha MP and B Y Vijayendra, were, however, granted bail along with his son-in-law Sohan Kumar.
Yeddyurappa on July 31 had resigned as the Chief Minister of Karnataka after he was indicted by the Karnataka Lokayukta Santosh Hedge in the illegal mining report.
Yeddyurappa and his family members were named by Karnataka Lokayukta N Santosh Hegde in what he called Rs 16,000 core illegal mining scam.
