Sexual-harrasmentMangaluru : A 19-year-old girl with intellectual disability who was allegedly sexually harassed by her uncle in Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka was rescued along with her 14-year-old brother.

The siblings were rescued by Bantwal child development department. The man is accused of often beating the siblings.

Bantwal child development project officer Gayathri Bai H said the rescue operation was undertaken on Friday, after the neighbours informed the panchayat and the panchayat’s task force for women and children brought the issue to their notice.

The siblings lost their parents and were looked after by their grandmother. Unfortunately, after their grandmother’s demise recently, they started living with their uncle and aunt.

“Our team including supervisor Shobha visited the house and interacted with teenagers. It was evident that the accused used to beat them on several occasions. However, since the girl is suffering from intellectual disability, she was not able to express herself clearly. She has told us about sexual harassment. She alleged that the accused would take her out of the house and touch her inappropriately. We were quick to shift them from their house”, said Gayatri.

“While the girl has been shifted to the Swadhar Rehabilitation Centre, the boy has been sent to a boy’s home after presenting the case before the child welfare committee. We are now looking at various options to rehabilitate the girl. The panchayat has been extremely supportive“, Gayatri added.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered.
