Puttur: The State government on Sunday distributed compensation to the family of two who died in a wall collapse during heavy rain in Puttur on Saturday.
Parvathi (70) and Dhanush (11) were sleeping in the bedroom of their house at Hebbarbail in Puttur when the compound wall of their neighbour’s house collapsed on their house at around 1.45 a.m. on Saturday due to heavy rain.
The compound wall of the victim’s house gave in to the impact burying both the woman and the child.
Minister for Urban Development and Housing U.T. Khader, Member of Parliament Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLA from Puttur Sanjeeva Matandoor, Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil S. and Additional Deputy Commissioner Kumar went to the house of the victims on Sunday.
According to Mr. Kumar, ₹ 10 lakh was given to the family. In addition, ₹ 95,000 was handed over for damage to the house.
Reports reaching here said that a tree fell on a moving car at Dharmasthala on Sunday morning. However, four persons in it were rescued by local people. They sustained minor injuries.
But the car was completely damaged. Traffic on Mani-Puttur highway was disrupted for some time on Sunday morning after a tree fell on the road. Hence, traffic from Mangaluru to Puttur was diverted at Kalladka, via Vitla. Some vehicles were diverted on the Mani-Peramogeru-Kedila Puttur route.
Meanwhile, monsoon receded in Dakshina Kannada on Sunday. The district received an average 111.7 mm rainfall in 24 hours ended at 8 a.m. on Sunday. Bantwal received 140.6 mm, Mangaluru 152.3 mm, Sullia 114.1 mm, Puttur 83.8 mm and Belthangady 67.9 mm rainfall during the period, according to the office of the Deputy Commissioner.
