Udupi: Sea erosion along Malpe, Thottam and Padukere beaches has intensified and has become a serious cause for concern. Huge waves breaking upon the shore is taking away coconut trees with it and the families living besides the shore are in much distress.
Since no retaining wall has been constructed along Malpe and Thottam area, the sea water has entered many houses and already washed away several trees. Many people at Thottam rely on the coconut trees for their livelihood and now they fear they will lose their livelihood say the residents with much concern.
“The huge waves that lash the shore are scary. We are spending sleepless nights. Boulders should be dumped in the affected areas,” they suggested.
A permanent solution from the sea erosion and the rough sea as well, demanded a resident.
With a lack of tourists, Malpe beach wears a deserted look. The CCTV cameras installed along the beach have suffered damage due to the rains and the visitors have been prevented from entering into the sea. Meanwhile, the rough sea is cleaning itself with heaps of plastic, liquor bottles and sandals being washed to the shore.
