London: Bombay movies’ Mogul of Navketan Pictures, and a yesteryear hero and Phalke awardee, 88 year old Dev Anand, died in London by heart attack in the presence of his Son Sunil on Sunday (IST 3-30 PM) in a Hotel room, before he could be admitted to a hospital.

The debonair film actor had a style of his own in Hindi films, and was a legend in his lifetime, with a lifetime Achievement Award coming his way.

The funeral rites (cremation) rites (cremation) would be held in London, his secretary Mohan informed a shocked Press.

Dev Anand, a Punjabi who married his co-star Kalpana Kartik, was a disciplined movieman, among so many naughty indisciplined producer/director/actors in the Bollywood region, said Vasant Shenoy, who knew him well.

Dev started a 60 year career with ‘Banarasi Babu’ of S. Mukerji, Filmistar owner. Shenoy was first assistant director to SM in that film. Shenoy was a replica of Dev Anand and Shashi Kapoor, and had acted as a double in their films.

Dev Anand ate dishes prepared in Sunder Shett’s canteen in Filmistar, Shenoy (64) informed on Monday, Dec 5 here. Dev Anand loved many women, including Suraiya, a singer actress.

Chetan and Vijay were his famous brothers.
