DC speaks to Press persons on the proposed new Fish Market on top of City Centre Mall

In a press meet held today at the City Centre premises, attended by MCC Commissioner Dr. Vijaya Prakash and city MLA N. Yogish Bhat in Company, DC V. Ponnuraj discussed the plan to form a new fish market on the top floor, with a separate vegetable market nearby as well. The DC went round the fish market floor at the CC Mahal before talking to the Press.

He wanted people to buy fish and vegetables at one place, but in separate stalls to avoid walking distances in search. These facilities will cost Rs 100 crores, he estimated. About 350 (fresh fish) sellers, 125 (dry fish) vendors, and 30 other varieties of seafood sellers will be suitably accommodated in the new fish division of sale, he added.

He dwelt on the need of a good market place for the fishermen who catch varieties of fish, and for Mangalore to have an international standard fish market. It is left to the govt. to construct such a place for bringing and selling fish in a city that eats seafood predominantly. The market is being built to suit the needs of local fisherwomen, so as to raise their monthly income. The old fish market will be removed stage by stage and the sellers will be parked elsewhere temporarily, before finally allowing their trade at the Centre on KS Rao Road, he indicated. Ports Minister Krishna Palemar in his speech, concurred with this new arrangement for a new fish market.
