Mangalore : It seems, the Mangalore city corporation ban on use of plastic bags below 40 micron thickness, has had no major impact, with shopkeepers continuing to use as well as sell such bags. The MCC officials have conducted a few raids in this direction and one more raid on May 9, Wednesday on several shops in the Central market area led to the seizure of the banned plastic bags weighing over 260 kgs.
The MCC team was led by Madhu, environment officer of MCC and other officials. The shopkeepers trapped for the first time are liable to pay a penalty of Rs 250, while the penalty amount increases during the second time raid, and the license of the shopkeeper trapped for the third time is likely to be cancelled.
Four shops in Bunder area were also sealed for running without trade license.
