Mangalore: Police Martyrs’ Day was observed at the District Armed Reserve Police Grounds on October 21, Sunday under the joint auspices of the Mangalore Police Commissionerate and Dakshina Kannada District Police.
Ashok G Nijagannavara, Principal District and Sessions Judge, who spoke on the occasion, said it was the duty of the society to remember the police martyrs who laid down their lives while serving the society.
Manish Kharbikar, Mangalore Police Commissioner spoke on the importance of the Day and said the Day was being observed ever since 20 soldiers were ambushed by Chinese Army in Ladakh resulting in their death on October 21, 1959.
Pratap Reddy, Western Range IGP, Abhishek Goel, District Superintendent of Police, also spoke.566 police martyrs who had lost their lives this year were remembered on the occasion. The police flag was lowered at half-mast following three rounds of gun fire to commemorate the martyrs.
