Mangalore : There was some confusion at a polling booth at Capitanio on May 5, Sunday when a group of students who stayed in a hostel at Kankanady were prevented from voting by the BJP workers by stating that they did not belong to Mangalore. The BJP men reportedly told them that they should vote in their hometowns and not in Mangalore.
As news spread, even Congress workers gathered at the spot leading to a heated argument. Security personnel had to rush to the spot to take control of the situation. Though Congress leaders including JR Lobo arrived and requested the police to ensure the students were allowed to vote, they said they were helpless. The students had to then return without voting. Even a teacher from Tirthahalli who stayed in the city was prevented from voting on the same pretext.
Police maintained tight security in the area following the incident.
