Mangaluru : The Sixth Additional District and Sessions court on Wednesday awarded death sentence to serial killer Cyanide Mohan, 56, for the murder of a woman from Kasaragod in Kerala. Judge Sayeedunnisa awarded death sentence to Mohan under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Public Prosecutor Jayarama Shetty said, further the court has pronounced Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) of 10 years under IPC Section 366 IPC (Kidnapping), seven years under Section 376 IPC, (rape), 10 years under IPC Section 328 (Causing hurt by means of poison), five years under IPC Section 392 (Robbery), 10 years for IPC Section 394 (Voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery), one year for IPC Section 417 (cheating) and seven years for IPC Section 201 (Causing disappearance of evidence). The court ordered Mohan to pay a fine of Rs 30,000. Defaulting on payment would lead to additional jail term.
The main arguments in the case was presented by public prosecutor Judith OM Crasta who was recently transferred and Jayarama Shetty argued on the sentence. Shetty said, “Mohan remained calm as the verdict was pronounced.”
He is lodged at Hindalga central jail, and the hearing was held through video conferencing. This is the 18th case that Mohan has been convicted. Mohan has been awarded death sentence in five cases so far, of which one has been confirmed by the high court, said Judith OM Crasta
The court had examined 47 witnesses and marked 72 documents and 43 material objects. Mohan met the victim, a beedi worker, aged about 28 years, at the Kumble bus stand in April 2009. On May 21, 2009, they travelled together from Kumble bus stand to Kushalnagar and stayed in a lodge. Like in all other cases, after having sex with the victim, the next day (May 22), on the pretext of going for a puja, he took her to the KSRTC bus stand, where he gave her, a contraceptive pill laced with cyanide and asked her to consume the same in the toilet.
