Puttur: Dharmashree award for 2011, normally conferred on distinguished persons for public services rendered to society in any field of life, has been conferred on renowned classical singer, Dr. K.J. Yesudas who is in Padma Vibhushan group in India.
The award is given by a Trust in Eshwaramangala, in Mangalore taluk, on January 11 in a function held there.
Assembly speaker K.G. Bopaiah presided. The award was presented by Ramachandrapura Mutt seer of Hosanagar, who stated that Indian music has no boundaries even in the modern times. Raghaveshwara Swami spoke of Yesudas as the most sublime Indian music personality.
Yesudas in an acceptance speech referred to Carnatic music as an ocean, whereas other kinds were like rivers. It had 72 independent Ragas, inspired by nature.
Education minister V.H. Kageri also spoke. Hereditary priest of Kollur and patrons of Dharmashree Foundation were present on the occasion.
