Mangalore : The police department in Mangalore launched simultaneous raids on various places including, shops hotels and cafes in various parts of the city on the evening of February 6, Wednesday, as part of its efforts to tackle the growing drug menace in Mangalore.
The step comes in the wake of the suicide of Sneha, a drug addict recently.According to one information, the Kadri police had formed as many as five squads to launch the operation.
Two shops near Valencia were raided by a team led by ACP Jagannath and inspector Diwakar of Pandeshwar police on a tip-off that the shops were supplying ganja. Shops near Sharada Vidyalaya were raided by Kadri police while cafes in Gold Finch were raided by the Bunder police. Even the Samruddhi lodge near Market road was targeted.
Though there is no information on the exact number of raids, it is said the police could not seize drugs from any places. However in a raid at one of the places which was however shut down, police found cigarette butts and straws.Eyewitnesses say those inside had escaped from the back door.
