Mangalore : Environmentalists, farmers and green activists under the banner of Sahyadri Samrakshana Sanchaya launched a demonstration in front of the deputy commissioner’s office on Oct 2, Thursday demanding the political representatives to clear their stand on the Nethravati diversion project proposed by the state government.
The activists presented the water from the river in earthen pots to the elected representatives from Dakshina Kannada with the ultimate question ‘Will you save the Nethravati River or erase it?’
Addressing the protestors, Dinesh Holla, convener of Sahyadri Samrakshana Sanchaya, said that in the name of supplying drinking water to other districts, the state government and its officials are trying to sell the Nethravati through Nethravati river diversion project.
The representatives who fail to protect the river must resign from the post, he said.
The activists said that they will present pots filled with river water to Minister for Forests and district in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai, Minister for Health and Mangalore MLA UT Khader, Minister for Fisheries and Moodbidri MLA Abhaychandra Jain, Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Mangalore North MLA Moidin Bava and Mangalore South MLA J R Lobo.
