Kundapur: Gangolli fishermen, who are utilizing country boats for fishing, stopped fishing on Tuesday, March 6 and protested at the port against fishermen utilizing techniques prohibited by the association and state governments for fishing.
Manju Billava, leader of Gangolli country boat fishermen association said, “The government at the canter and state have restricted fishing utilizing bull trawling, combine trawling, perscene boats with artificial lighting on or in the water and gill net. The government have said that subsidy, fisheries license and registration of those fishermen who violate the rules will be cancelled and legal action will be taken against them,”
“However such illegal fishing is still followed and traditional fishermen are confronting fish famine. The issue was examined recently held before at the deputy district commissioner’s office,” he included.
“Such fishing was banned before but has started again. Prompt move ought to be made against them. Otherwise intense protests will be held together with fishermen from other centres,” he said.
Raw fish dealer’s association president Mohan Kharvi, fishermen cooperative society president Naga Kharvi and Byndoor country boat fishermen association president also took part in the protest.
Fisheries office executive Chandrashekar who came at the spot, said that the deputy director is in charge of this issue. “The issue will be conveyed to his notice. However coastal protection force does not have the necessary boat with them,” he said.
Kundapur sub divisional officer Bhoobalan who arrived and got their petition, said that the issue will be talked about with the deputy commissioner and reasonable move will be made in a few days. “We will endeavour to give a boat to Gangolli coastal protection station,” he said.
Byndoor police circle inspector Parameshwar Gunaga also joined voice. Kota Venkatesh Kharvi stated, “Every one of the authorities knows about the illegal fishing but no one approaches to make a move. Because of this the local fishermen are suffering”
