Bangalore: Karnataka’s Energy Minister Shobha Karandlaje said today that the Union Environment/Forest Ministry had not yet cleared the Gundya Hydelproject proposed in Hassan district which was to bring an additional 400 MW of hydro power to the state. The controversial Gundya Project was to swamp over 166 hectatres of forest land located on Western Ghats, the media was told.
The state has asked the Centre to reconsider its view on the proposed Hydel Project, as she would arrange to conduct a re-survey on the extent of possible damage to ecology and submit a fresh proposal, she added.
If this project was commissioned, it would reduce power needs by 200*2MW capacity limits at Gundya, she hoped. Replying to another question, the Centre has promised enough coal supplies for a Thermal Power Project to be set up in Chattisgarh by Karnataka, she said.
