Mangaluru : Home Minister K J George said that State government would strengthen cyber cells in four divisions in the State. Presently, the cyber cells are managed by Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Addressing mediapersons in the city on Monday, he said that cyber cells would be established in city commissionerate and at district-level too.
The minister said the government would also take measure to check drug menace.
The government will merge Excise Enforcement and Lottery Prohibition wing with the regular police shortly. After the merger, the Superintendent of Police will have full power to take action against those who are involved in the drug menace.The vacant posts of crime branch will be filled at the earliest, he added.
The minister said that the dearth of policemen would continue till the training of recruited personnel was completed. For the time being, Home Guards have been asked to assist the police. The honorarium for Home Guards has been increased from Rs 200 to Rs 325 per day (Rs 400 in Bengaluru), he said.
To a query on the government’s different stands on Prasad Attavar and Prof K S Bhagavan, the minister said that the government would take stringent action against those who provoke people for criminal activity. “If a writer tells something which is not harmful to society, then the department cannot do anything. If anyone complains that it is provoking, then police will take an action,” he said.

George has warned that government wouldn’t tolerate any kind of rowdyism. It is the responsibility of police to stop rowdyism. They will have to open rowdy sheet against culprits and expel them from the district. Even the public prosecutor should argue properly so that the miscreants are punished by the law. Meanwhile, the minister said that he would convene a review meeting to discuss about 12 cases referred to the CID from the district, he said.
