Mangaluru : The officers of Airport Customs, Mangalore, have seized about 0.90 kgs gold in foil strip form and Foreign Currency valued INR 3.30 lakhs from an inbound and outbound passenger while the contraband was smuggled into and attempted to be smuggled out respectively .
The gold in foil strip form was attempted to be smuggled by a non- eligible passenger by cleverly concealing in plastic containers of talcum powder and crayons and also in cartons of corn flakes, creams wafers, drinking glasses and POFAK OMAN snack. As the gold foil strips were attempted to be smuggled into India, the contraband valued about Rs.23.5 lakhs was seized and the person who arrived from Dubai was arrested yesterday as he attempted to smuggle contraband into India in contravention of the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962 read with the Baggage Rules, 1998. The arrested passenger was produced before Shri Sunil Kumar Singh, the Principal Civil Judge (Senior Division) and Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mangalore, who remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days.
In another case, the officers of Customs, Mangalore International Airport, effected the seizure of foreign currency, 4400 Euros valued over Rs.3.31 lakhs from an outbound passenger to Dubai while the contraband was attempted to be smuggled out of India without documents showing licit procurement of currency.
Totally contraband valued about Rs.27 lakhs was seized from two passengers yesterday. Further investigation is under progress.
