DGP dattaMangaluru : Director-General and Inspector-General of Police Rupak Kumar Dutta has directed the district and city police to rework on the village beat system and effectively implement it.

Speaking to reporters here on Friday, Mr. Dutta said during his visit to the troubled areas in Bantwal, Vitla and Mangaluru, he noticed lapses in implementation of the beat system. This system in vogue since April makes a constable the main contact point for people.

Mr. Dutta said the village beat system, which was a game-changer in policing, places the onus on constables in maintaining peace in the region assigned. “There are some shortcomings in its implementation,” he said and added that the reason for the shortcomings was involvement of personnel in law and order duties in the last 45 days.

Mr. Dutta said the new Superintendent of Police C.H. Sudheer Kumar Reddy has effectively implemented village beat system during his earlier stint in Mandya. “The SP and the new Police Commissioner T.R. Suresh have assured of effectively implementing the system. We hope to see better results next time,” he said.

On the frequent transfers of personnel from Bantwal in the last few days, Mr. Dutta said: “Anybody who does not act has to go. We mean business,” he said and added that the department has not gone for mass transfer that would affect the morale of the force. “But the message is clear for the personnel to act effectively,” he said.
