National Road Safety Week-2021 inaugurated

Road SaftyMangaluru : The National Road Safety Week-2021 was inaugurated at a function held at T V Raman Pai Hall on January 20, Wednesday.

The event organised under the aegis of the Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate

City Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar while calling for strict adherence to traffic rules, said the violators are penalised to check cases of violation and not to fill the coffers of the government.

Pointing out that most road accidents are caused due to negligence, he said people of Mangaluru who are known for their intellect and high education levels should be a role model in terms of following traffic rules.

He also exhorted students to give top priority to adherence of traffic rules and urged vehicle owners to sensitize their employees on the need to follow traffic rules.

DCP Vinay Gaonkar in his introductory remarks revealed that a total of 165 major accidents in the Commissionerate limits in 2018 had claimed 120 lives. In 2019 the number of accidents stood at 146, he said and added that 154 had lost lives. In the year 2020, there were 114 major accidents in which 116 people have lost lives, he informed.

DCP Hariram Shanker, Chief Superintendent of Mangaluru Circle of Department of Posts Shreeharsha, Union Bank Deputy General Manager Jagannath, RTO Varnekar, Roshni Nilaya Principal Juliet and others were present.

On this occasion 200 barricades were handed over to the Police Department on behalf of Union Bank.

Prior to the ceremony students of various colleges took out a Road Safety Jatha from Nehru Maidan to the function venue. There was also a skit on road safety rules by students of Roshni Nilaya.
