Udupi :  In a significant ruling, the Karnataka High Court has directed that the Udupi Zilla Panchayat elections for the post of  President and Vice President, be held.

It may be recalled here that the elections were earlier postponed due to some differences within the ruling BJP, with regard to nomination of candidates.

The elections slated to be held first on October 4 was postponed to October 12 when the BJP members failed to be present at the meeting. The lack of quorum had forced the election officer to postpone the meeting.

In the meantime, Diwaker Kunder, the Congress Candidate had filed a petition in the high court stating that the election could have been held even when there was lack of quorum. But, the court had stayed the election.

Later, even the BJP candidate Upendra Nayak had  also approached the court and had pleaded that all members be directed to attend the election meeting.

The court contended that there was no need for quorum for finalizing or withdrawal of nominations and that the election process can begin from the point where it had stopped.
