Mangalore : A body of a young girl was found near a lake in Dasakodi in Bantwal, by the side of National Highway, on Monday afternoon.
The victim has been identified as Sowmya (20), daughter of Seetharam Sherigar, a resident of Korya village. A police team led by Circle Inspector Anil S Kulkarni and Sub Inspector Shekhar inspected the spot where the body was found and the police suspect the death as a case of attempt to rape and murder. The body was shifted to a private hospital in Deralakatte for post mortem procedure.
According to the sources, Sathish (21), a resident of the same village has been taken into custody by the police for interrogation related to the death of Sowmya.
Sowmya, who hails from a poor family, had recently completed D.Ed and was working as a teacher in a private institution in Udupi. She had left her aunt’s home in Udupi on Monday, as she had told that she would be going to her home to submit an application in response to the government calling for teachers’ appointment to schools.
A college student Vidya who was walking on Kashekodi-Neerapade road, found the mobile phone of Sowmya lying on the road side. On receiving calls from Sowmya’s mother and aunt, the villagers began to search for Sowmya and traced the body in a nearby lake.
Injury marks were found on the body and a gold chain and a nose ring which Sowmya had worn, were missing on the body. The police have detained Sathish, as a villager had reportedly seen him walking on the same road with wet clothes.-DH News
