Chennai : Eleven coaches of a passenger train derailed in Tamil Nadu this morning killing at least one person and injuring 50 others. The accident has also caused cancellation of several trains.
According to reports, the Muzaffarpur-Yashwantpur Express train derailed in Sitteri near Arakkonam around 6 am.
Railway officials say rescue teams were immediately rushed to the accident site, located 100 kms from Chennai. Those injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals.
The exact cause of the accident is not known yet. The accident has affected rail traffic on the Arakkonam junction. Several trains coming from Chennai including the Kovai Express, the Duronto Express, the Bangalore Express and the Brindvan Express have been cancelled and many other have been delayed.
Sources in the Railways say normal services are expected to resume by the evening.
In 2011, nine people were killed when two trains collided with each other at the Sitteri station.
