Bangalore: The education minister Kageri at lower levels, now wants vocational training from 9th standard in high schools soon. What do we have now before children as they leave 10th standard?
English at the first standard with Kannada as the medium of instruction, optional languages Konkani, Tulu and other languages at higher primary from 6th standard and then vocational studies like typing, computer, tailoring, book-binding or carpentry from 9th class onwards.
So, 3 languages and 2years of Gandhian “basic education” system that combines technical studies before leaving high school, with a final year test in education.
The basic education or vocational training for self-employment is likely to be provided in high schools, from next educational year in 2012, says V.H.Kageri.
It may be noted that before 1950, such vocational training, in one way or other, was given in Christian high schools, apart from “moral lessons” for character building in DK district.
