Mangalore : Department of ophthalmology, Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore in association with Wenlock District Hospital organized a ’World Sight Day 2011’ at Seminar Hall, 2nd Floor, OPD Block on October 13, Thursday.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Madhav Bhandary, chairman of MUDA said that the blindness is the major problem to the human being. He said that around 2000 sights are read to be given to the public.
The Lady Goschen Hospital has got the fund of Rs 18 crore by one of the donor and it is one of the achievements of Deputy Speaker N Yogesh Bhat. He said that he along with other doctors and donors have collected the amount of Rs 47 lakhs so far for the poor patients.
The hospital conduct free eye surgery to the poor people, but they spend their money in big private hospitals. The importance of the eye can be known when a person sits for three hours with closed eyes in the house. Most of the Mangaloreans are corrupt, he regretted.
Dr Saroja, dean of Wenlock Hospital said that the hospital started District Blind Control Society in 28 districts, in order to check the magnitude of the blindness. Later free spectacles will be given to the school children and teachers.
The free eye cam will be held in schools every January 15 to 30 and June 15 to 30. During the camp, the doctors will also check the deficiency of Vitamin A and will provide it too.
