Mangaluru : The restoration work at Madikeri-Mangaluru road connecting to coastal city of Mangaluru is taken up.

Madikeri taluk has received 3,700mm of rain – 1,000mm more than last yer’s figure. In Virajpet taluk, the average rainfall recorded this year is 2,030mm – 500mm more than last year’s record – while in Somwarpet, it is 2,100mm, an increase of 530mm.

Meanwhile, brisk work is under way on the Madikeri-Mangaluru highway to prevent blockage of traffic in future. A crack on a hillock is being carefully repaired near Madenadu.

Deputy commissioner Sateesha BC said more preventive steps are being taken. The highways authority has kept a close eye on the situation and has started a road safety clearance operation.

Heavy rain in Kodagu in 2018, 2019 and 2020 had caused severe damage to this road. Huge soil erosion in Kartoji, near Madenadu, is being cleared using excavators. Tippers are carrying the mud and soil to dump it elsewhere. More than 30 labourers have been engaged to carry out the work round the clock. More than 35 electric poles have been moved to the other side of the road using hydraulic machines.
