Puttur : A person who pledged spurious gold ornaments and cheated cooperative bank to the extent of lakhs of rupees is arrested by police.
The accused Girish Kumar (32) is a resident of Kayaokad House in Berike in the taluk is arrested person.
The person who had arrived in a car bearing Kerala registration number and visited a few cooperative banks in Uppinangady and convinced the staff that he was in a tearing hurry and could not wait for the arrival of jewel appraiser to evaluate the ornaments. He handed over fake jewellery which weighed and looked like genuine gold. As he was in a hurry, the staff gave him loan against the pledge of these ornaments.
When he approached another cooperative institution at Uppinangady, the staff realized his fraud. However, he escaped before he could be nabbed.
Two cooperative banks thereafter filed written complaints in the police station at Uppinangady of cheating.
Uppinangady police sub-inspector Eraiah D N and staff arrested the accused and produced him in the court. The court has entrusted him to police custody for interrogation. The police suspect that he would have cheated many other cooperatives banks also similerly.
