Mangaluru : The Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate will conduct classes on local languages along with courses on Call Detail Records analysis software, said Mangaluru City Police Commissioner M Chandra Sekhar.

He was speaking during the closing ceremony of the 10-day Tulu language workshop organised by the Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate in association with University College, Mangaluru, at the Police Commissioner’s Office on Monday.

The commissioner said it was very important for the constables and head constables who play a vital role in identifying criminals to learn the local languages.

He said in the days to come, the beat system in the police will be strengthened and training programmes will be held in this regard too. He said the superintendent and the IG have suggested including staff from their respective departments to the language learning classes. The police personnel from both these departments will be part of the next batch of Tulu learning class, the commissioner said. He added Rs 500 cash and commendation certificate will be awarded to those police staff who have successfully learnt the language.

Principal of University College, Mangaluru, Uday Kumar Irvattur commended the initiative of Mangaluru Police Commissionerate and said language is the music of the heart and learning new languages is a good experience. Mangaluru University has started Tulu diploma course and the classes are being conducted in University College, he added.

Convener of the workshop and Professor at Commerce department of University College, Dr Yathish said dedication is important in learning any subject and the police personnel were disciplined in their approach. He said another batch of Tulu workshop will be conducted.

As many as 26 police staff hailing from various places in the state and working in different police stations under the Commissionerate were part of the workshop. The participants shared their experiences in Tulu and said now they were capable of conversing in Tulu.
