Mangaluru : With regard to garbage sliding down from Mangaluru City Corporation’s (MCC) landfill in Pachanady and damaging property, deputy commissioner S Sasikanth Senthil has sought a special package from the government for the permanent rehabilitation of families that lost houses, and also to prevent further sliding of garbage from the landfill.
With the help of National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surtathkal, and Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, the district administration is preparing plans to find a solution to the garbage issue at MCC’s dumping yard. Nearly seven acres atMandara village near MCC’s landfill at Pachanady were fully destroyed after a heap of garbage slid down from the landfil due to heavy rain recently. The sliding down of waste from the landfill has damaged more than 25 houses in the region, and large tracts of arecanut and coconut farms were also destroyed.
At a review meeting, deputy commissioner S Sasikanth Senthil told district minister Kota Srinivas Poojary that the issue needs to be taken up by the state government. “It is a major issue which requires the government’s intervention, who should take the necessary measures to resolve the issue. Teams from NITK and IISc have visited the site, and with their help, action plans are being prepared to solve the issue. Though four to five plans were prepared, to solve the issue.
