Mysore: In a heart-rending scene, thirty bodies, which were fished out of Undabatti lake near Marase Gate on Nanjangud Road, to which a tempo had fallen last evening, were consigned to flames this morning in a mass cremation organised jointly by Mandya District Administration, Police Department and the local villagers at the respective village of the deceased.
Twenty bodies were cremated together at Aralakuppe, six at Katteri, one each at Damarahalli, Hiremaralli, Ballakeri and Yelakeri, all in Pandavapura taluk.
The scene was heart-breaking, especially at Aralakuppe where 20 bodies were kept for public view at the Primary Health Centre. Thousands of people from the village had queued up to pay their last respects to the deceased.
Former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, Legislator C.S. Puttaraju, Lok Sabha Member Cheluvarayaswamy, Raitha Sangha President K.S. Puttannaiah and MLC Sandesh Nagaraj were among those who consoled the grieving family members of the deceased today. Opposition leader Siddharamaiah visited Katteri Village.
Mandya DC P.C. Jaffer, Additional DC Muddumadappa, Police Superintendent Kaushalendra Kumar and Additional SP Prabhu supervised the arrangements providing enough security.
All the bodies were subjected to autopsy at KR Hospital and JSS Hospital before handing them over for cremation.
While 27 bodies were fished out yesterday, 3 more were found today.
