Mangalore : IRS Commissioner of Customs D.Purushotham inaugurated the new regional unit of The Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence (DGCEI), working under the Central Board of Excise & Customs located near Nantur Circle on October 15, Wednesday.
Speaking on the occasion he said that, DGCEI is an arm of Central Board of Excise & Customs functioning under the Department of Revenue and Ministry of Finance which focuses on the detection of evasion of Central Excise duty and Service Tax.
The Mangalore unit will be headed by a Deputy Director and would have the strength of three Senior Intelligence Officers and 6 Intelligence Officers and would function under the control of the Zonal Unit at Bangalore.
Lakshmi Hande Puri, IRS, Commissioner of Income Tax, Mangalore and Dr. M. Subramanyam, IRS, Commissioner of Central Excise & Service Tax, Mangalore participated as the guests of honour and presided over the inaugural ceremony.
The newly set up Mangalore Regional Unit would lead the anti-evasion activities in the revenue districts of Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chamarajanagar, Chikkamagalur, Hassan, Kodagu, Mandya, Mysore and Shimoga.
