New solar power plant at NITK Surathkal to be inaugurated on November 12

NITKMangaluru: “National Institute of Technology, Surathkal (NITK) has installed solar power plant on the roof of its building. The new solar power plant will be inaugurated by NITK Board Governors President Vanitha Narayan on November 12,” said NITK Director Prof K N Lokesh.

Speaking to the reporters on Thursday at NITK Campus, he said that solar plant has been installed on the roofs of 11 buildings in the first phase. It is planned to install the same on other buildings also. Under the project of National Solar Mission and after the instructions of Central Human Resource Department all the higher education centres will be installing the same.

“Four of the solar units have already started functioning. This is a helpful project for Go Green campaign and the government is supporting to install solar power plants everywhere,” he said.

NITKHe further said that Clean Max Solar Development Organisation is managing the power plant. NITK has joined the company for the same. It will provide electricity to the college for next 25 years, and the cost of the electricity is lesser than MESCOM bill.

“As the campus is nearer to the sea, quality of the solar panels and other equipments has been maintained. The present project may save Rs 5 lakh month for the institution,” said Dr D N Gaonkar.

Institution Dean Prof Ashok Prabhu, Registrar Prof Raveendranath, Dr Arun Isloor were present.
