Mangalore : DK Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim said that the government buses and vehicles that are used for distributing food and civil supplies must compulsorily install Global Positioning System (GPS).
Speaking at a meeting convened at DC Office on July 31, Thursday DC said that the district administration has set a deadline of August 30 to install GPS in sand transportation vehicles, whereas by September end, the GPS must be installed in government buses and vehicles that supply ration, kerosene and milk.
One of the KSRTC officials said that department has taken steps to install GPS to express buses in reply DC said that it was more important to install GPS in buses traveling in rural areas, since it has lot of complaints.
Rajavarma Ballal, president of Canara Bus Owners’ Association said that earlier GPS were installed in service buses at the cost of Rs 17 lakhs and it was of use.
M Prasadnath, NITK Students’ Welfare Officer said that GPS will help the department to monitor about the vehicle travelled at a particular time and speed. Further, computer enabled with GPS tracking system must be installed to track the vehicle. A sim card is required for every GPS, he said.
DC said that quality GPS kit can be purchased for Rs 10,000.
Nagendrappa, Deputy Director (In-Charge) of District Mines and Geology Department said that previously GPS was installed in 3,450 lorries used for sand transportation, but at present, only 319 vehicles follow and operate it.
