Mangalure: Mangalore University received applications for its postgraduate science courses at the ratio of 1:2 (two applications per seat) for 2016-17 indicating the demand for basic and applied sciences.
The university received 2,200 applications for its 1,053 seats of 30 science courses under 26 departments.
Of the total seats, 260 seats were “extra seats” exclusively reserved for NSS, NCC, Sports, cultural, disabled categories, J. Ishwar Bhat, Dean, Faculty of Science at the university, said. If the “extra seats” were deducted, the applications received for the current academic year would be in the ratio of 1:3, he said.
Demand for basic sciences has not withered. For example, the university received 595 applications for 140 seats of Chemistry, Applied Chemistry and Organic Chemistry courses together. The university received 242 applications for 114 seats of Physics. It got 173 applications for 65 seats of Mathematics, 117 applications for 45 seats of Botany, 127 applications for 42 seats of Applied Zoology.
The cream of meritorious category students have applied for science courses of the university. For example, the percentage of marks obtained by the topper in the selection list for Chemistry stood at 99.92 per cent. The marks obtained by the topper in the selection list of Mathematics stood at 99.5 per cent. It was 98.83 per cent in case of Physics and 97.29 per cent in case of Botany.
But it was not sure if they are going to join the university or opt for the same courses offered by private and government aided colleges.
The university conducted the counselling for admission to postgraduate science courses on Wednesday. It was for candidates under the selection list. The admission for candidates in the waiting list will be conducted on Thursday.
Clarity would emerge on whether the cream of meritorious category students has joined the university or not on Thursday after the completion of the counselling process.
The university introduced postgraduate courses in Environmental Science and Food and Nutrition from the current academic year.
It received 13 and 55 applications for the courses, respectively.
The counselling for admission to courses under arts and education streams for both candidates under selection list and waiting list would be conducted on August 12.
