Bangalore: Congress MLA Bairathi Basavaraj’s brother was booked on Friday for manhandling and abusing an officer attached to the Sampigehalli police station. The accused has been identified as Nagesh.
Police said the incident took place at Telecom Layout in Sampigehalli when Nagesh was riding pillion on his friend’s bike.
Head constable Shivanand and his colleague Dhanigol were on rounds as chain-snatching incidents were reportedly on the rise in the area. Shivanand stopped Nagesh and asked him to show the vehicle’s documents. Nagesh said he was MLA Basavaraj’s brother and did not have to show any documents. But Shivanand persisted. Nagesh got angry and started abusing and threatening the officers. This led to an argument and Nagesh allgedly manhandled the officers. A complaint has been filed against Nagesh and his friend, who are absconding, police said.
On June 27, Bairathi Basavaraj, a first-time MLA from KR Puram constituency, allgedly slapped traffic constable Beema Lamani because he was unable to clear a traffic jam in Banaswadi. However, police brass brushed aside the incident as a mere argument between the MLA and Lamani.
