New Delhi: Even as several MPs gathered at the Parliament to pay tributes to martyrs on the 10th anniversary of the December 13 terror attack, the families of the martyrs are boycotting Parliament to protest the delay in hanging convict Afzal Guru.
Angry over the delayed execution of Afzal Guru, convict in the Parliament attack, the families will meet the President Pratibha Patil on Tuesday urging her to expedite the process.
It was on December 13, 2001 when five heavily armed terrorists entered the Parliament, the symbol of India’s democracy, and began indiscriminate firing.
In the gun battle 12 people including the security men and Parliament’s staff were killed.
Ten years down the line, the families of the martyrs are yet to come with the loss, while the main conspirator of the attack, Afzal Guru is still alive, yet to be hanged. Afzal has sought mercy pardon from the President of India and the decision from the Prez is awaited.
His cousin, Shaukat Hussain Guru, has been freed after completing his 10-year term and Shaukat’s wife, Afsan has been acquitted with the Delhi University (DU) Professor SAR Geelani was has also been allowed to go scott free.
There were brave men who laid down their lives to save the lives of several Parliamentarians inside the house.
The families say they have been suitably compensated but in delaying the death sentence of Afzal, they say justice has been denied.
On Tuesday, the families boycotted the tribute ceremony in Parliament. Besides, the All India Anti-Terrorist Front led by M S Bitta will also submit a memorandum to the President of India demanding special terrorist courts to ensure speedy trials.
